Our local HS team in Woodland Park went 5-4 this year after a couple of winless seasons. This year they had wins of 51-0, 49-10, and 42-0, and a loss of 56-19. I don't recall any great outcry on either side about the margins of victory. I do know that last year or the year before, they were down something like 35-0 at the half (Homecoming game, no less) and they let the clock run the last quarter (or more).

    Man up.

What the fuck happened to Herman Edwards' press-conference rant, "Hello?! YOU PLAY TO WIN THE GAME!"?

If the other team can't keep pace, that's not the winning team's fault. What happens when a dominant team, capable of blowing out the other team, gets marching orders to slack off, and suddenly they are caught sleeping and the losing team is suddenly within striking distance to win, or wins outright?

If the losing team does not look at all to be competitive, then do what they do in women's college softball; call the game when the dominant team reaches a certain margin too big to even expect the losing team to narrow.

makes eminent sense in leagues where there are mechanisms in place for the playing field to be (relatively) level going in. And where the losers get paid mega-bucks win or lose. At the college/HS level that's just not the case on either score.

Which is why it is the Administrative folks' duty to enact mercy rules that work. DO NOT tell a player or coach to adjust their expectations. Don't blame the teams. They are doing exactly what they've trained hard to do. In T&F if you get lapped in a race or jump 4' lower in the PV, don't expect the winner to go easy on you; they are doing their best. Isn't that what we always say, 'Do your best!'? Losing is an honorable outcome too.

Mega-mismatches in high school need to addressed at the root cause. It doesn't make sense for a tiny high school with 150 students total and no football field of their own to be playing against a school with 1700 students and their own practice field and full-time team of coaches. Neither team learns anything useful from that sort of ultra-mismatched blowout.

Local anecdote: Okla Class 2-A .. State #2 ranked knocked off #1 (perennial private school athletic powerhouse) 40-0 last night.

In Florida those types of school size issues don't come up too often however there is definitely a caste system even within classifications of the have's, the have some's and the have not's. This results in the have some's walloping the have not's and the have's walloping the have some's by 40 and 50 points routinely.

It is rare I hear anyone whine about the scores but we do hear about the distribution of talent related to if certain players really should be attending certain schools.

The hinges came off the transfer doors 2 years ago, and it's the Wild West here now, as kids transfer to find the next hot program. Not so bono.
