I am giddy with anticipation in what seems to be the best Zurich meet (ANY DL meet) in some time. This is how I remember it: the BEST single-day meet of the year, the one with the MOST impact on the Annual Rankings, exc. OG/WC. Sometimes it even exceeded those meets because there were match-ups that didn't occur at the OG/WC. Defar/TDib, anyone?

I'll be glued to what stream I find, even if I have to listen to Greek commentary!

Agree totally that entry lists provide much fodder for speculation as greatest DL/single day meet ever. (Shot put being today notwithstanding!!!)
    BUT......
How many times have we been set up by the pre-meet press conferences, the media hype, the spectacular list of entrants with WR holders and OG medalists......and then let down by the actual results??

I suppose it comes down to whether you're more interested in marks or competition between equals.
Take the women's 5K as perfect example.
The HYPE is all D vs D for women's distance (and Ethiopian!!!) supremacy.
But what if they run, say 14:45, with the final 1500 in 4:05??
    Exciting? Yes!!
But the TRUE test of who is best??
    NO!!!!

Now, if they ran with the pacer through an 8:40 or faster 3K......THEN went all out for the win......THEN the "hype" would equal the result!!

And that goes for EVERY event with loaded fields!!!

You and I, as Marks Snobs, are in the minority here (at least in the vociferocity of those against rabbits), but yes, I can't fully appreciate it unless everyone is running, throwing, jumping to FAILURE!! Go hard or go home!

As usual, Marlow and aaronk set themselves up for disappointment! Too bad.

It looks like I have some options: 1) Eurosport in Polish, although I'm not certain they will show it live (or at all), because there doesn't seem to be a "TV Guide" station on this cable/satellite feed; or 2) Universal Sports, which I seem to be able to view on computer and iPad because I log in with DirecTV, my US provider. If push comes to shove, I also have PureVPN.

The Zurich meet certainly has excellent fields, but often after a WC/Oly the athletes are not at their best, and certainly not interested in record attempts in the longer races.

Enjoy it for what it is!
    Cheers,
    Alan Shank

The era of frequent WR-setting is long past us, so I'm not concerned that we don't see that in the post-WC meets anymore, but without actually looking at the meet results for each year in fine detail, I've been left with the feeling over the last 6-8 years that the first meet after WC/OG is flat-flat-flat (Stockholm certainly was this year). Yet there was a time when it was easily the best meet of the year.

Can't think of why that might be, but that's my gut.

And yet, I rarely seem to be . . . If conditions are bad and therefore marks down, I adjust for that. These meets DO have rabbits, so the times ARE good. The only things that do disappoint me are championship distance races that dawdle. Pretty much in every other event athletes are trying their hardest from the get-go.
