    I assume Mormons in ID and UT and the SE Bible Belt explain the low alcohol consumption in those states but why the heavy drinking in New England and why is MI an island surrounded by moderation?

    I suspect that weather plays a big factor in that one; there's a decided north to south distribution to me, and explained by what the heck else you gonna do when there's nothing to do but sit at home, snowbound?

    Also a SAD effect, people trying to fight depression during extensive dark periods (see Finland?)
