It would be interesting to see how many of the measles cases are in pockets of people choosing not to vaccinate, how many are in areas where vaccines are not easily available, and how many are in mostly vaccinated populations for whom the vaccine may be failing.

In the US so far it has mostly been in unvaxed clusters, the number of cases linked to the vaccine failing aren't super high. But that has been an issue at times in other parts of the world where proper temperature control of the vaccine in storage/transit is not always reliable.

A loophole is an interesting way to look at it...

Right now, shots are required to be in school, with varying levels of exemptions available depending on state. The logic being that in a group setting, everyone is more at risk.

Homeschoolers in every state are exempt from vaccine requirements because they are not engaging in that group setting.

What is the alternative? Remove children from the custody of their parents if their parents refuse to vaccinate them? Have the police show up and pin the kids down and hold the parents at gun point and forcibly vaccinate the kids?

Do you really think the foster care system can handle the load if we remove all unvaxed kids from their parents? Do you think our law enforcement can handle the civil unrest that would come if parents were held at gunpoint while their children were forcibly vaccinated in front of them?

Oooh I know, maybe we should make every unvaccinated child wear a yellow star on their chest at all times with a "U" for unvaccinated on it and prohibit them from entering any businesses. Why limit it to kids? Maybe we should apply it to adults too.

Urban governments that ignore their own public hygiene and other pubic health laws rain disease and death on their residents. The only rational response is to find a scapegoat... enter the antivax community.

Caveat : user4 has taken every vaccine.

Measles and chickenpox are both well known to be more serious in adults than children.

It really behooves adults who can afford it to pay for titers and check their immunity to both. Even if you had one or both as a child and are presumed immune, that does not guarantee lifetime immunity 100% of the time.

There have been increasing coverage over here both online and in the quality press in the last few months of a growing online anti-vax movement.

Just to be clear , from the article the antivax communities are not the single cause of the measles outbreaks.

I highly recommend a new N.Y. Times Show on FX. "The Weekly. " It covers a number of stories with an investigative journalism approach. The opioid trials, and one on You Tube in Brazil. The latter includes the effects of paranoid conspiracy on the Zika virus. People stopped buying anti mosquito repellant, and refused vaccinations.
