How have I missed the huge contagion that is norovirus? In many Jacksonville schools, huge numbers of students are out with it, over half in some! Did we call it something else before?!

There's always Devil's Island for such folk. They could happily infect each other there and leave the rest of us alone.

As I've said before, quoting Ron White, "You can't fix stupid."

consider yourself lucky; i picked it up in Barcelona a couple of years back (as did someone else that we dined with).

I'd call it a piece of shit of an affliction, but the opposite is true.

There is no vaccine for norovirus. It is common and very contagious.

If you have ever had a terrible stomach virus with lots of puking and diarrhea, you probably had norovirus.

A lot of people refer to it as the stomach flu, which leads people to mistakenly believe that the flu vaccine will protect against it.

I found these names on the net:
    • Norwalk agent/virus/Norwalk-like virus (after location of outbreak where virus was identified)
    • Roskilde illness (location of infection earlier than Norwalk)
    • viral gastroenteritis (commonly abreviated to "gastro" in Aus)
    • stomach flu
    • winter vomiting disease
    • EGH disease (Barcelona)

    I didn't look for non-Anglophone local versions.

Norovirus is slightly off topic as there is no vaccine to be avoided as far as I am aware.

However, it is on topic in that it is faecally transmitted, so spreads due to poor hygiene, food cleaning/cooking of high risk products, and/or by infectious people. People should know better.

This human failure is exacerbated by its longevity outside the body (weeks on door handles, food preparation surfaces etc) and even longer if it has a moist environment such as a water body.

In Australia, it's mostly reported as occuring on cruise ships and in nursing homes because there's more likely to be a death among older people.

Young people probably get the same rates of infection in close environments but get over it without as much drama.
